I would like to welcome our viewers to the Communications Workers of America Local 1104 website. Local 1104 is a very diverse local serving members in telecommunications, nursing, operator services, mechanics, clerical, and TA’s, GA’s, and RA’s in the SUNY system. Our diversity has proven to be our strength and by working with so many groups it has not only improved our communications but our bargaining skills. Local 1104 uses this website to inform our members in conjunction with our newsletter, our tape and our e-newsletter “THE HUB”, as well as mail outs and flyers of everything that is going on in the local at a particular moment. I urge all of our members to utilize all of these things to stay informed. An informed membership is a stronger membership and when a local has a strong membership we are able to achieve more things for the betterment of all. Make sure that you always keep a current address on file with the local as well as your personal e-mail address so that the local can make all the current information available to you. All of our communiqué’s provide a great opportunity for us to keep our members informed in an effort to improve the lives of all of our members. God Bless and work safe.
HBO Documentary Film: Triangle Shirtwaist Fire
Friday March 25th is the 100th Anniversary of Shirtwaist Factory Fire and HBO will be showing a documentary at 6:30 PM about this horrific tradgedy in American Labor. It demonstrates the greed and insensitivity of employers and shows how far they will go to accompolish their goals, even if it means the loss of human lives. It was after this fire that government started to pay attention to workers safety and the conditions under which they were forced to work.
The sad part is that with the things that are going on in Wisconsin, Ohio and other states, it appears that government is taking the part of the employer and working conditions will decline with the help of our elected officials. This is a worth while show to see and clearley demonstrates labor's progress; where we have been and how we got where we are now.
The documentary will show that there was pain, suffering , and even death when you try to take on big government and big business. In the CWA we lost one of our union brothers during the 22 week strike against Nynex in 1989. Those of us who were there will never forget, for those of you who will not be home at 6:30 this Friday, please record the show and watch it the first chance you get. We have a huge battle approaching us and we all need to be united, and educated!
